I happened to listen to two excellent sermons in the last week which examined the passages from today’s (and yesterday’s) readings. I strongly recommend giving one or both a listen if you have a spare 40 minutes or so.
The first is a lecture by Mark Dever (who, coincidentally, will be speaking at a conference in Edinburgh in 2 weeks) on the parables of the seed in Mark chapter 4. This is excellent and a very encouraging message about the power of God’s word.
The second is a talk by Dr Tim Keller of Redeemer Presbyterian church in NY. It comes as part of a series (he’s talking at a conference I think) so it might seem a little confusing in the first 5 minutes! He starts on the subject of Jonah, talks about the nature of “revival” and moves on to talk primarily about Jacob wrestling with God. This exposition has been hugely valuable to me in helping me to understand the story of Jacob, and the long process he went through to realise what his life really needed more than anything else.
